Treestand Safety: The Fall Data Nobody Reads

Ask a hunter what’s most likely to put them in a hospital this season and most will think of the firearm. They’re wrong, and the data is not close. Across whitetail country, falling out of a tree has become the most common serious deer-hunting injury — more of a threat than firearms — and the research on when and how those falls happen points to a small set of specific, preventable failures. This isn’t a lecture about being careful. It’s a look at what the numbers actually show and what they tell you to do differently, because the difference between a near-miss and a wheelchair is usually a single habit you either have or don’t.

What the incident data actually shows

The research here is more solid than most hunters realize, because emergency rooms and trauma registries keep records, and several studies have dug into them across different states and years. The picture they paint is remarkably consistent.

A long-running study in Pennsylvania found that falls from treestands had become the leading cause of deer-hunting accidents in that state, with fall rates climbing steadily over the study period even as firearm-related hunting injuries declined — the two lines literally crossed, with falls overtaking firearms as the dominant injury. A multi-year analysis of trauma admissions found that the overwhelming majority of treestand-fall patients sustained multiple injuries, and while outright deaths were a small percentage of cases, a substantial share of the injured were left with a lasting, dependent functional disability at the time they were discharged from the hospital. That last point deserves to sink in: the typical bad treestand fall doesn’t kill you, it disables you — spinal fractures, shattered limbs, head injuries that change a life. In Ohio, a decade of data showed that falls made up roughly half of all deer-hunting injuries requiring medical attention, the large majority of those falls involved stands, and most fall victims required surgery, with spinal fractures featuring heavily in the injury list.

A frequently cited body of research out of Wisconsin, analyzing five years of hospital data, estimated the lifetime risk of a potentially debilitating treestand fall injury at roughly three percent for hunters who hunt every season — and when you include falls that didn’t require medical care, the lifetime probability of falling at all climbed to thirty percent or more. Read those two numbers together: roughly one in three all-season hunters will fall from a stand at some point, and a meaningful fraction of those falls will cause a serious, possibly life-altering injury. The risk rises the longer and more avidly you hunt, accumulating over a career, and the most active lifelong hunters carry the highest cumulative odds. The average fall victim, incidentally, is not a reckless teenager doing something stupid — studies put the typical age in the mid-to-late forties, which is to say experienced adults who have climbed into stands hundreds of times and grown comfortable doing it. Familiarity, not inexperience, is the profile.

Two patterns in the data are worth holding onto, because they tell you exactly where the danger concentrates and therefore where to focus. First, timing: injuries cluster heavily in the opening days of the season and around the Thanksgiving period — the times of heaviest activity, earliest mornings, coldest hands, and most haste. Second, and most important of all, the connection to harness use is overwhelming. The large majority of serious fall injuries happen to hunters who were not wearing a harness, or who were wearing one but not actually connected by it at the moment they fell. The harness sitting in the truck, or worn but clipped to nothing during the climb, protects no one.

There is genuine good news buried in the numbers, and it makes the case better than any warning could. The Tree Stand Safety Awareness Foundation’s analysis of national injury-surveillance data found that treestand falls dropped by roughly seventy percent across about a decade, falling from over five thousand a year to under two thousand. That decline tracks the spread of harness and lifeline awareness through the hunting community. In other words: the fix works, and we can measure it working. Hunters who adopted the harness-and-lifeline habit stopped falling, or stopped getting badly hurt when they did, and the national numbers fell off a cliff as a result. The injuries that remain are concentrated among the hunters who haven’t adopted it.

The harness and the physics of a fall

A fall from a treestand is not a long fall by dramatic standards — most happen from around fifteen feet — but it doesn’t take a long fall to do catastrophic damage. By the time a human body has fallen fifteen feet, it’s traveling fast enough to break bones and fracture spines on impact, which is precisely the injury pattern the studies keep finding: spinal fractures, multiple injuries, surgery, lasting disability. The countermeasure is a full-body harness, and the “full-body” part is not a marketing distinction — it’s the whole point. Older single-strap belts and waist-only systems could arrest a fall in ways that caused their own serious injuries, concentrating the arresting force across the abdomen or chest. A properly fitted full-body harness distributes the arresting forces across the torso, shoulders, and legs and keeps you upright and supported after it catches you.

But here’s the part most hunters never learn, and it’s genuinely critical: being caught by your harness is the beginning of an emergency, not the end of one. A person left hanging in a harness after a fall — unable to reach the stand, unable to get back to the tree — can develop suspension trauma (also called orthostatic intolerance), in which blood pools in the legs while the harness straps restrict circulation, and which can become life-threatening in a surprisingly short time if the person can’t move, relieve the pressure, or get down. This is why a harness alone is not a complete safety plan; it’s the first half of one. The second half is a realistic way to survive being caught: a relief strap or suspension-relief device you can stand on or use to take weight off the leg loops and keep blood circulating, a practiced plan to either climb back into the stand or descend to the ground, a means of calling for help (a phone on your body, not in the pack hanging in the stand), and — simple but vital — someone who knows where you are and when to expect you home, so a search starts before it’s too late. Wearing the harness saves you from the impact; the rescue plan saves you from what comes after the harness catches you.

Staying connected from ground to stand

The single most important behavioral fix the data points to is also the one most often skipped, and it follows directly from when falls happen: stay connected the entire time, not just while you’re settled and seated in the stand. A huge share of falls happen during the very moments hunters feel safest and least bother to protect themselves — climbing up, climbing down, and especially the awkward transition at the top where you move from your climbing system onto the platform of the stand. A harness clipped in only after you’ve reached the platform and gotten comfortable does precisely nothing for the climb and the transition that got you there, which is where so many people fall.

The answer is a lifeline used together with your harness: a rope system that runs from the ground all the way up to the stand, with a sliding attachment (a prusik knot or mechanical device) that you connect to at the ground and that travels up and down the rope with you. Connected this way, you remain attached through the entire sequence — the climb up, the dangerous transition onto the platform, your time in the stand, and the climb back down — so that your foot leaves the ground attached and touches the ground attached, with no gap anywhere in between. The connection sequence at the top, where the lifeline lets you transfer onto the stand without ever being unclipped, closes the single most dangerous gap in the whole process. Layer on the basics that any climber lives by: maintain three points of contact on the ladder or steps at all times, move deliberately rather than rushing in the cold dark of opening morning (one of the high-risk windows the data flags), and never carry anything in your hands that should be on a haul line.

Pre-season inspection and setup

Equipment fails, and it fails most often when it’s been hanging in the weather for a year, which is exactly how a lot of stands and straps spend their off-season. Before the season — not on opening morning in the dark — inspect every stand and every component of your system in daylight with your full attention: straps and webbing for rot, fraying, discoloration, and the UV degradation that sunlight inflicts on synthetic fibers; cables and chains for wear, kinks, and rust; welds, bolts, and hardware for cracks, corrosion, and loosening; ratchets, buckles, and attachment points for proper function. A strap that spent twelve months in the sun and rain is emphatically not the same strap you hung last fall, and a stand left up year-round deserves the very closest scrutiny of all, because it has weathered the longest.

Set up smart, too. Hang and adjust stands with a partner or with proper equipment and your harness already connected; never climb or descend with a firearm or bow in your hands — haul them up and down on a separate line once you’re secured in the stand; and take the time to do every step right rather than in a hurry, since haste and darkness are exactly the conditions the data identifies as high-risk. The most effective single thing you can do is build yourself a written pre-season checklist and actually run it every year: harness inspected and properly fitted, lifelines installed on every stand you hunt, each stand’s straps and hardware checked, haul line attached, rescue plan and a body-carried phone confirmed, and someone designated to know your plans. The hunters who do these unglamorous things are the ones who don’t show up in the injury studies.

The whole lesson reduces to something almost embarrassingly simple, which is exactly why it bears repeating against the weight of all that data: most treestand falls happen during the climb and the transition, most serious injuries happen to people who weren’t connected at the moment they fell, and a full-body harness plus a lifeline used from the ground up — backed by a real rescue plan — prevents the great majority of them. The documented seventy-percent drop in falls is what happens when hunters take that seriously. Be part of that number, not the other one.


Before opening day, do one thing that matters more than any other: inspect every stand and install or test a lifeline so you’re connected from the moment your foot leaves the ground until it touches down again. Then build a body-carried rescue plan and share your pre-season checklist with the hunters you take to the woods — the habit only protects the people who actually adopt it, and the data shows it protects them dramatically.
